I said I would post up my classroom pics by now and still haven't....sorry. A few didn't come out to good so I have to retake them and just haven't gotten around to it. After a year and a half of homeschooling, we're finally starting to get into the groove of things. I've been trying hard not to mess up what we've got going, hence my reason for not posting the pics sooner.
In the meantime, here is a cartoon strip that made me LOL, literally. Enjoy! :)<br />

I love homeschooling but like any job, I have my days. I'm just happy to know there are other moms out there who can relate. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-26347653933523926832011-09-04T02:17:00.000-05:002011-09-04T02:17:12.047-05:00Just Checking InHello All! So it seems I tend to leave huge gaps in between posts. I guess my life is busier than I thought. When I do have free time for the blog world, I usually end up catching up with all the many blogs I follow and have no time left to post anything on my own blog.<br />
I have some new pictures to share of our classroom but unfortunately I haven't had time to upload them just yet. I promise I will get to that within the next day or so. I'm almost done organizing and decorating it but I wanted to go ahead and share with y'all how it looks so far. Keep an eye out for my next post if you'd like to see how it looks so far.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here we are on the NJ side of the Hudson River during my visit last November. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Hmmm...where should I begin? How can I possibly describe this amazing person in just one post? I'll just speak from the heart and hope it turns out well. <br />
<br />
This dear friend of mine is the kind of friend everyone hopes to find. She is so kindhearted and is very sympathetic to those around her. Anytime she is able to, she will lend a hand and more to help someone. I have witnessed her give what she really doesn't even have to give at the time, not worrying about how she will be able to make due. (This is about her but I just wanted to add that her hubby is the same way & that makes them all the more special as a couple.) She knows how to make a person feel comfortable and is great at listening & giving advice. She is also a great example to me of how to be a good wife and loving mother.<br />
<br />
She and I have a special kind of friendship, a "treasure to be cherished" is how we'd describe it. Over the years, we have shared many, many laughs, tears, embarrassing moments, and even our deepest secrets with one another. I don't deserve a friend so special but I am ever so grateful to have her in my life. She is always there to lift up my spirits and encourage me when I'm feeling down. She has definitely saved me thousands of dollars with all the free 'therapy sessions' she's given me over the years. Lol<br />
<br />
We can go weeks without speaking and now that we live miles away from
each other, months without seeing each other. Yet, when we get an
opportunity to do one or the other, it's as if we'd just been together
yesterday. <br />
<br />
I remember when we first met, she asked me to be in her quinceanera (a Hispanic celebration for young women when they reach 15 years old) and I just thought she was the sweetest girl. It wasn't until I was planning my wedding that our friendship really began to grow. She had married shortly before I did so with that, we had something in common. We were two young girls entering into a new chapter in our lives. We had the fortune of being neighbors for almost two years which gave our friendship an opportunity to grow even more.<br />
<br />
One of our favorite outings when she lived nearby was to hit our local QuickTrip for a drink and go grocery shopping late at night. Sometimes, we'd just drive around for a while, only to end up parked outside my house for hours on end chatting about random topics some meaningful and some just plain silly.<br />
<br />
We were there when we each married, we were there for the births of one each others' children, and we've been there for countless other events whether big or small. Our husbands and children are close too which makes it all the more wonderful. So many cherished memories over the years, I only hope we're able to add to them in the years to come.<br />
<br />
Stacy, on this special day my birthday wish for you is that you know and feel loved by your family and friends. I'm sure your family has something special for you and you'll have a day filled with sweet little smiles, lots of hugs & kisses, and the gift of being surrounded loved ones. I hope that this new year is filled with many blessings from above. I'm so sorry I can't be there in person to celebrate with you but I'm working really hard to get there as soon as I can for a visit so we can have our day of fun in the big city. Love you! :)<br />

My family and I love eating 'bowl meals' of all kinds. This is one of our faves and is so simple and quick to make. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6F2J_HjdHdJ3uaPVSi8dxS-bWCcmDxrvvUHv2_kxFnMh6S1B8r8epzVa1q1WWApD8okLxicSZVo_o1gXhnOmibRVnMCvGQgYbHf21qny7B0gH1kk3XUNomlcS73_mzXwXvtCyrZdW5AeI/s1600/chicken+bowl8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6F2J_HjdHdJ3uaPVSi8dxS-bWCcmDxrvvUHv2_kxFnMh6S1B8r8epzVa1q1WWApD8okLxicSZVo_o1gXhnOmibRVnMCvGQgYbHf21qny7B0gH1kk3XUNomlcS73_mzXwXvtCyrZdW5AeI/s320/chicken+bowl8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Ingredients:</u></b> </div>
<ul>
<li>2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast</li>
<li>1 1/2 cups of <b>cooked</b> white rice (or brown)</li>
<li>2 potatoes</li>
<li>1 zucchini squash</li>
<li>1 bell pepper</li>
<li>1 white onion</li>
<li>1 1/2 cups of baby carrots </li>
<li>1 1/2 cups of broccoli </li>
<li>4 eggs</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Serving Size: 4-5 </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Season chicken on both sides with your favorite rub recipe or a store bought rub. We used McCormick Grill Mates Roasted Garlic & Herb this time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwhfliEc8AwYgwLHakwmJEGs3E4hHkiDPHAgcExrjdtOzNuH_vau9FZlO4XgnIezFgddyVz9yCwInAbVZCquPIvnlgjf-1XNvgdYYDMl7J-4p9g4gWMEI1V2TMzLHOIHDfAA4rEcYBOrt8/s1600/chicken.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwhfliEc8AwYgwLHakwmJEGs3E4hHkiDPHAgcExrjdtOzNuH_vau9FZlO4XgnIezFgddyVz9yCwInAbVZCquPIvnlgjf-1XNvgdYYDMl7J-4p9g4gWMEI1V2TMzLHOIHDfAA4rEcYBOrt8/s320/chicken.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Cook chicken and slice into cubes when finished. We sometimes grill the chicken outside but this time I used the waterless cooking method and cooked it stove top.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(I just have to add that if you're in the market for new pans, I highly recommend surgical stainless steel cookware. They can run for over a $1000 (or so I've heard) but my mother-in-law was able to get an incredible deal on Amazon. These were a gift from her last Christmas and they have become my new best friends in the kitchen.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn_zP8e7FkdG6qByNzqi1aMaJ2yNQfGK-AXpo0Y1BBIlU24pmSAqWRxaeSfA2-wMLEcIGOKZtdarfKrXn3_pcZvU_MYZ1TGMhOYbL3dhtxO7SWqppYa6xmLPOAJXVQjsZgNmqMoXLYlS5M/s1600/chicken+bowl2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn_zP8e7FkdG6qByNzqi1aMaJ2yNQfGK-AXpo0Y1BBIlU24pmSAqWRxaeSfA2-wMLEcIGOKZtdarfKrXn3_pcZvU_MYZ1TGMhOYbL3dhtxO7SWqppYa6xmLPOAJXVQjsZgNmqMoXLYlS5M/s320/chicken+bowl2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. While chicken is cooking: Chop all the veggies. (If adding carrots and potatoes, boil them until fork tender after chopping.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijnHXDT1KBCqtDfH_8D5LxyojCnR6qIGJg11lLizDtMryTcZa3mV9l7jibMtpIU-KW9xWyxOaNBBDSUqpqsOzrj6yXjvWslkeLKaHI6YTV7K_qqFn7dtsVkMrjS-HwP8P3tRTotQCCIfVT/s1600/chicken+bowl3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijnHXDT1KBCqtDfH_8D5LxyojCnR6qIGJg11lLizDtMryTcZa3mV9l7jibMtpIU-KW9xWyxOaNBBDSUqpqsOzrj6yXjvWslkeLKaHI6YTV7K_qqFn7dtsVkMrjS-HwP8P3tRTotQCCIfVT/s320/chicken+bowl3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Spray pan with non-stick cooking spray and add onion and bell pepper to pan. Cook until onion begins to soften. Add all other veggies and cook for about 5-7 minutes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeivXbkmw5aEx1aMfU30IWNdtCj9xgqths3BuKQJG3ES5I4Vwa1fPTAwHynPOaOeIsgKhtRGblf86HR7D7QNgSsBhQAf2HQ5_dlBV5Iogo9CLB4O8N-k0wNkR9uNwkKdJ8zJBbpnDkuH1C/s1600/chicken+bowl4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeivXbkmw5aEx1aMfU30IWNdtCj9xgqths3BuKQJG3ES5I4Vwa1fPTAwHynPOaOeIsgKhtRGblf86HR7D7QNgSsBhQAf2HQ5_dlBV5Iogo9CLB4O8N-k0wNkR9uNwkKdJ8zJBbpnDkuH1C/s320/chicken+bowl4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Add eggs, chicken and rice and cook until eggs are done. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinwYLTmRr6WcyaTWbbm_PLc0f7phxvUrTEVaL40x8NqZQao3phxUEBK3gdMVgKBYDQBNx3vn_uIzX0q7_uuimBJaen2_E6ZE7L4XWKzJn1AzcqH9YoJvoSVA21JOl36_KQ4qEeJ8RtuahT/s1600/chicken+bowl5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinwYLTmRr6WcyaTWbbm_PLc0f7phxvUrTEVaL40x8NqZQao3phxUEBK3gdMVgKBYDQBNx3vn_uIzX0q7_uuimBJaen2_E6ZE7L4XWKzJn1AzcqH9YoJvoSVA21JOl36_KQ4qEeJ8RtuahT/s320/chicken+bowl5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here is this yummy dish in a bowl and ready to eat:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6F2J_HjdHdJ3uaPVSi8dxS-bWCcmDxrvvUHv2_kxFnMh6S1B8r8epzVa1q1WWApD8okLxicSZVo_o1gXhnOmibRVnMCvGQgYbHf21qny7B0gH1kk3XUNomlcS73_mzXwXvtCyrZdW5AeI/s1600/chicken+bowl8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6F2J_HjdHdJ3uaPVSi8dxS-bWCcmDxrvvUHv2_kxFnMh6S1B8r8epzVa1q1WWApD8okLxicSZVo_o1gXhnOmibRVnMCvGQgYbHf21qny7B0gH1kk3XUNomlcS73_mzXwXvtCyrZdW5AeI/s320/chicken+bowl8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We like to add soy sauce in our bowl, but this is optional. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can pretty much add or remove any ingredients to your liking.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

*brussel sprouts</div>

For the past month, I had-and still have-a very bad sinus infection. It started with massive daily headaches and last Friday I began feeling very dizzy and nauseous. Oh, and I had lots of pressure in my ears. By Monday, I'd had enough <strike>why the heck did I wait so long</strike> so I went to get checked out and get some meds. I never knew sinus infections could be so horrendous. Meds have been helping a lot but I still feel the symptoms from time to time throughout the day.<br />
On Tuesday night, my daughter told me that her legs were itching and that they had been since Sunday night. Since she had gone a few days without mentioning it, I assumed it wasn't that bad. I had her soak in an oatmeal bath and then lathered her up with Eucerin lotion. She slept well through the night. Yesterday, I see that it is spreading more and more on her legs, even to the bottom of her feet! It didn't look quite like chicken pox but since it went to the bottom of her feet, I thought maybe it was so I took her in to get checked out. Turns out it's just a bad insect bite infection. They gave me a prescription for over-the-counter hydrocortizone and tell me to use that and also continue to give her the oatmeal baths.<br />
Tuesday and Wednesday my son had allergies which made for one fussy boy. His eyes were burning throughout the day and he was overly sensitive to anything and everything around him.<br />
As I write this I think, "Well aren't we just a big group of whiners." Lol It sounds like it but believe me, we had reason. None of us felt too great, each with our own personal issue. Oh dear, another thought just came to mind: MY POOR HUSBAND! He's had to endure these days attending to us, running errands for me, and being patient with us. I think he deserves an award, I'll have to get on top of that ASAP.<br />
On the upside, I was able to read quite a bit during my time in bed. And as if I wasn't already hooked on pinterest, I was able to add lots of pins to my boards. I even made some cute little yarns dolls for the kids (my sons' is a "yarn man", he told me) from a pin I was inspired by. I can't promise that I'll post about that tonight, but I will def try to soon.<br />
I should also add that as of today, we're all better for the most part and in this very moment, kids are running around pretending they're a prince and princess in a castle. They notified me that they decided I'm the queen and even put a crown on me. Yay! That works for me. :)<br />
<br />
I feel like I'm cheating you guys if I don't post any pics, so I'll leave you with this sweet one of my kiddos with two of my besties' children on a lovely summer evening.<br />

Anyone heard of it before? Of course you have! This site has quickly become a "must join site" for many in the blog world and for good reason. You can create boards about anything and everything and can collect pictures of things that inspire you from practically anywhere online.<br />
I recently created a new board for myself simply titled "mason jars". I thought I'd share with you all some of the the mason jar love and maybe even inspire you. :)<br />

Most of us assume that if we're tired, then once we lay down, we should be able to fall asleep without a problem. This was definitely not the case for us. Hubby and I have been having trouble sleeping for some time now so we decided to give a try at making over our bedroom in an attempt to provide a room we could fall asleep in each night without so much trouble. We were pleasantly surprised when our attempt deemed a success. Having a comfortable atmosphere to rest in each day helps relax our mind, easing our way into having a good night's sleep. I've tried to create it to where we are able to wind down if we need to forget about the stresses or busyness of the day by providing a calm, clean (most of the time), and inviting room. <br />
Lots of changes have been made in our master bedroom but we still have a few details that need attention. Not sure when I’ll be able to get to those, but in the meantime, here are a few pictures of what I’ve done so far. <br />
This is the dreary look we had going on before. I knew it was plain, but I didn’t realize just how bad it was until I saw these pictures.Talk about having a bare room. <br />
<a href="http://www.thebrittainhouse.blogspot.com/"><img alt="br before 2" border="0" height="250" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-CKCagF6snnU/TgGOrA6SB4I/AAAAAAAAAME/eL5UCCgzEPU/br%252520before%2525202%25255B26%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="br before 2" width="359" /></a><br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ja8k4NmmntY/TgGOr3EBdEI/AAAAAAAAAMI/oxNE5VudfSs/s1600-h/br%252520before%2525203%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img alt="br before 3" border="0" height="254" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-N1MaDpHuL8o/TgGOsAavg_I/AAAAAAAAAMM/A3irHwdsfeo/br%252520before%2525203_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="br before 3" width="365" /></a><br />
The first thing I did was paint the walls. We used Silver Screen by Behr paint. For the baseboards and window trim, I used white semi satin paint that I already had. Once that was done, I sanded & painted the bedside chest. <br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-_cThX__v7Xc/TgGOs_YAMhI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/v9uFisJBtA0/s1600-h/chest%252520before%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img alt="chest before" border="0" height="259" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-PQUSP3_PU-Y/TgGOtW7AF6I/AAAAAAAAAMU/8DlWdBlg6QY/chest%252520before_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="chest before" width="191" /></a><br />

<br />
Here is the cardstock modern gallery wall I created above the bed. I had a <a href="http://thebrittainhouse.blogspot.com/2011/05/finishing-touches-to-master-bedroom.html">different idea</a> in mind but when I hung these up, I decided to leave them We really like the simplicity and are happy with the outcome. For the bedding, I bought a solid navy comforter and I already had the white sheets. I have some extra pillows from my living room set so I just bought a set of standard size navy pillowcases and tucked in the excess in the back. Seriously, you can’t tell from the front. As mentioned in a <a href="http://thebrittainhouse.blogspot.com/2011/04/girl-on-mission.html">previous post</a>, I was on a mission to get this makeover done spending as little as possible and I was able to find the pair of green pillows and cute accent pillow on clearance. <br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-M1udyPdv_Qk/TgGOu36yKwI/AAAAAAAAAMs/llxvAgK9fqE/s1600-h/br%252520after%2525201%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img alt="br after 1" border="0" height="430" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-DBqiIvRbgXE/TgGOvYQdFiI/AAAAAAAAAMw/szxbpGSDjnY/br%252520after%2525201_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="br after 1" width="313" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Hubby and I are sleeping like logs in our cozy new room. It's even become the new family hangout. I sometimes find my kids sneaking in during the day with a book in hand laying on my bed or sometimes just tucked into the sheets relaxing. My little guy loves his Legos so I sometimes find him with a small pile of Legos on my bed making his creation for the day be it a spaceship, car, house, etc. I’m glad to have been able to create a place where the whole family could find rest and comfort.<br />
I’ve added a few more touches to the room but I’ll share those with you
once we’re completely finished—or at least 90% finished. For some
reason, I tend to hop around from project to project so I can leave jobs
unfinished at times. Can anyone relate? Lol In the meantime, let me know what you think of the work in progress, I’d love to hear from you. <br />

I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with a few of my favorite girls last weekend on a mini vacation. When I say “mini”, I really mean “mini”. My very dear friend </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.thepreciouslittlethingsinlife.blogspot.com/">Stacy</a> was in town visiting family so four of us girlies decided last minute to go away for an overnight stay at a quaint little town nearby called Granbury. We didn’t arrive at the hotel until about 1 a.m. even though we were only 45 minutes away. You may be thinking, “Why did y’all even bother going?” Well, I guess you could say we had the desperate housewives syndrome at the time and we really needed to get away even if just for a few hours. Lol. Actually the main reason is Stacy is very dear to us and she doesn’t plan on visiting again this year so we we wanted to take advantage of our time together. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Back to the trip details. There was an indoor pool at the hotel and the front desk clerk was kind enough to open it back up so we could jump in for a short while. We went up to our room & decided to go all out and stay up all night as if we were teenagers again. We put on a chic-flick, one straightened another's’ hair, while I opted for giving myself a pedi. We caught a few zzzs and woke up just in time for a delicious complimentary hot breakfast. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Granbury is known for it’s cute little bed and breakfast inns and the many antique shops they have. We spent the afternoon going antiquing and had a delicious , hearty late lunch before heading back home. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Granbury's version of a boardwalk. It was cute and had plenty of bench seating with a lakeside view but just not what comes to mind when I hear the word 'boardwalk'. We had fun nonetheless snapping photos and getting our feet wet in the nearby man-made beach. </div>

Thinking of the trip and the time spent with the girls, the sweet song from Toy Story comes to mind: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">You've got a friend in me</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">You've got a friend in me</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">When the road looks rough ahead</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">And you're miles and miles</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">From your nice warm bed</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">Just remember what your old pal said</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strike>Boy</strike>, Girl, you've got a friend in me</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Bookman Old Style; font-size: medium;">There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you</span></div>

Good friends are hard to come by and I’ve been fortunate to have not just one but three amazing and inspiring girls to call friends. I’m so blessed to have these wonderful girls in my life!<br />

I just shared the cute <a href="http://thebrittainhouse.blogspot.com/2011/06/western-invites.html">invites</a> for my sister-in-law's shower, now I'm sharing the highlights of the decor. This theme is a timeless classic and I don't think it will ever go out of 'style'. I can't take all the credit, my sister-in-law helped a lot even though she was the guest of honor--she couldn't resist :), along with our dear friend <a href="http://www.thepreciouslittlethingsinlife.blogspot.com/">Stacy</a>, and a few others who helped with the food. </div>

As you can see, we used mason jars for the drinks and we added straws with homemade tags that read, "HOWDY" on them. For the tags we printed "HOWDY!" in two columns and cut in strips (each strip has howdy
twice). Then we just fold it in half and glued it together, leaving a
small opening at the center for the straw to slide through. Cuteness!</div>

This was a "mommy advice" book we made at the last minute. We used chipboard for the front and back covers and wrapped them in card stock. We included several sheets of white card stock inside for the guests to write their advice and tips for the new mommy.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was above the cupcakes. We printed out each letter and cut the paper down to size to fit on the printed card stock background. Simple but very cute. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had a traditional western themed menu: Brisket, chili with biscuits (baked muffin size for individual serving size), bread, beans, potato salad, broccoli rice casserole, sweet tea, and punch. My mouth is getting watery as I write this. :) </div>

So there you have it folks! This could easily be used for any kind of party. I would have loved to have bales of hay for the seating but it was winter and indoors so we couldn't get too messy. We still loved it as it was. :)</div>

Howdy y'all! Just wanted to share this cute baby shower invite that I made sometime ago for my dear sister-in-law when she was preggo with her first baby. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnKNuaMSqIG02kcqRV5DHo2__P5rPSd6A2TfKS_KLf0PKf3sPyBwBjOPR7q0sWhN2tkB4CtA-Srx6iJPwKo_iBQIoubs5BKVBBEMRF7b6IQWZO6YiWDTbBkpGhSUWN2cCs-2S_k8aHYav3/s1600/final.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnKNuaMSqIG02kcqRV5DHo2__P5rPSd6A2TfKS_KLf0PKf3sPyBwBjOPR7q0sWhN2tkB4CtA-Srx6iJPwKo_iBQIoubs5BKVBBEMRF7b6IQWZO6YiWDTbBkpGhSUWN2cCs-2S_k8aHYav3/s320/final.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To make these, I had some help from my hubby who happens to be a graphics pro. I found some western invites that I really liked and he recreated the hat, boots and blocks design for me. I did all the text. For the text, I found western fonts for free and downloaded them. Once that part was done, I printed these out and was ready to move on to the fun stuff.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used this craft hole punch to create the little circles.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/53447510@N02/5784821891/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="cutoutfinal copy by lch20, on Flickr"><img alt="cutoutfinal copy" height="223" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5224/5784821891_7233363dbf_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next, I rolled the edges along the ink pad to give it a little color so it would pop. You can angle it a less or more for thin or thick effect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdtWDoORWQdEom2XgXE2qMnG0SG5B0XBePEoxyYZzJfKSJHfY0bxtl0sTqGZCzCQMh6n9MDNAWOyK_dgc0FXhyV7q99fl1dmc5lj8zcvx65kn-zoRaLmoNHlVssY9w_W35IHMKBBYs8WwM/s1600/edging.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdtWDoORWQdEom2XgXE2qMnG0SG5B0XBePEoxyYZzJfKSJHfY0bxtl0sTqGZCzCQMh6n9MDNAWOyK_dgc0FXhyV7q99fl1dmc5lj8zcvx65kn-zoRaLmoNHlVssY9w_W35IHMKBBYs8WwM/s320/edging.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted it to be subtle but enough to see the color and this is what I ended up with. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk3s1pwnVwYfhOl8SkIDY1n0BWCvWB0xek9oxv9wAmItJ4iLgWt7Zp4wrzVdoY_fO8TM4rnqSH0lawc1IyWvLhjGf3RZXu3clQmMyYL-vavIvAtDl3zb8sTfCsafGwBM0tMXYXXIRaLhO8/s1600/edgingfinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk3s1pwnVwYfhOl8SkIDY1n0BWCvWB0xek9oxv9wAmItJ4iLgWt7Zp4wrzVdoY_fO8TM4rnqSH0lawc1IyWvLhjGf3RZXu3clQmMyYL-vavIvAtDl3zb8sTfCsafGwBM0tMXYXXIRaLhO8/s320/edgingfinished.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To size my brown card stock, I measured the printed sheet and added enough extra to allow for the folded flap. I had to use the little circle cut-outs to measure the flap. Once I folded the card stock, using the circle, I made a hole punch above and below the circle to run my ribbon through. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnovjqHsx6sGvq6_c2x8UINVgL6aZvkvZpX_c1meHGpqvymsh-gOFkiC4_fEVixAK-_OQPuFSpgk_snf5oHJw3HGLg3T8kgywZhp5Al8l1M5OuvWvgJiuCgH_kuKMZE-gNVw5FmxAhs5ah/s1600/ribbon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnovjqHsx6sGvq6_c2x8UINVgL6aZvkvZpX_c1meHGpqvymsh-gOFkiC4_fEVixAK-_OQPuFSpgk_snf5oHJw3HGLg3T8kgywZhp5Al8l1M5OuvWvgJiuCgH_kuKMZE-gNVw5FmxAhs5ah/s320/ribbon.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wrapped the longer side from the top of the card stock around the back and back over to the front. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOhNrr6XeiPmPgEItQSxPmFVYw-zN0tpkvGENR-71d1iIdz5-WUfHUqGNOXoEpdLqMCOiBZhX3lX-B-CM0AZhMnFeRIJ6vV8QvX6HKuCr0cV1hDLFeShJfKWquP1vSzgon9QdO3IgKl14L/s1600/ribbon+back+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOhNrr6XeiPmPgEItQSxPmFVYw-zN0tpkvGENR-71d1iIdz5-WUfHUqGNOXoEpdLqMCOiBZhX3lX-B-CM0AZhMnFeRIJ6vV8QvX6HKuCr0cV1hDLFeShJfKWquP1vSzgon9QdO3IgKl14L/s320/ribbon+back+copy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is how it looks right before I tied my knot to finish off the ribbon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh72YZ1jro10UhVI7CW4E4aOk41Xtr5vjM6b2dolAuAElPSDFGMNXz8BonyzDj5RdkrPHjeEYQZKzDPSBVhqkjJJeg69f682ProxtBEFAHGu9fQv34oYYIb12I5DyIP4mhYHoBUZ3pmz5T4/s1600/ribbon+front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh72YZ1jro10UhVI7CW4E4aOk41Xtr5vjM6b2dolAuAElPSDFGMNXz8BonyzDj5RdkrPHjeEYQZKzDPSBVhqkjJJeg69f682ProxtBEFAHGu9fQv34oYYIb12I5DyIP4mhYHoBUZ3pmz5T4/s320/ribbon+front.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lastly, I added the cute little circle and with a glue dot, I added these cute little boots which I found at Hobby Lobby. It was night time when I took these and the lighting was really bad. The colors are a little more vibrant in person but you get the overall idea of the invite. My sister-in-law loved them! She's my partner in crime when it comes to creating invites so I'm glad I was able to impress her with these. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I'm now trying to decide on what to do with the wall above my bed. I've seen some cute ideas that people have done with scrapbooking paper and being the scrapbooker that I am, this idea appeals to me a lot. Here are a few I like:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I like the simplicity and modern feel of this one by <a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/03/five-dolla-art/">Sherry & John at Young House Love</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also came across this cute idea. She used foam board & scrapbook paper on this one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can find out how do this yourself at <a href="http://www.queenofdiy.com/home-decorating/scrapbook-paper-wall-art.html">Queen of DIY</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here's yet another one using foam board that I liked from </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So after looking at these among others that I forgot to bookmark, I tried my hand at coming up with an idea. I am planning to go buy some frames tomorrow but in the meantime, I came up with a rough draft of sorts to get an idea of what I want. Here is what I came up with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used acrylic paint and a foam brush to make this design on the smaller scrap paper just to get an idea. I'm thinking if I go with this idea, I want to do the entire sheet with this design. I thought this design would compliment the print on the lampshades that I already have. <br />

So what do you think? Too simple? Too much? I'd love to get your input. Oh, and just in case you're wondering, I'm going to get black frames for these. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-87559534156870362902011-05-26T23:11:00.014-05:002011-06-01T17:00:35.620-05:00Restroom TileI am no expert when it comes to home remodeling but I I'm not afraid to venture out of my comfort zone and attempt to learn something new.This new braveness came upon me within the last year or so due to the long list of "to-do" projects we have for the house. Every time I try something new, it encourages me to push the envelope just a little more next time around. So far, I haven't caused too much damage and the results of all my efforts have been successful for the most part. <br />
<br />
Since we started working on our restroom, I kept debating my choices for floor options. My first choice of course was ceramic tile but neither my hubby or myself had any experience in laying tile plus since there is just a small floor space, we didn't want to spend a lot of money of materials. We made a trip to Home Depot and I decided I'd just lay the laminate floor tiles as a temporary solution because we needed this project to be done ASAP. To my surprise, they had on display laminate floor tiles using grout in between, just like ceramic! They also had a simple step-by-step guide to show how to achieve this look under the display. It looked simple enough so I thought it was worth giving a try. I have to say, the floor looks really good and in our opinion, you cannot tell it's not ceramic. A good friend of ours who has experience in flooring couldn't believe it was laminate when he came to visit. Of course, that made me all sorts of happy knowing I could fool someone like him.<br />
<br />
I thought I'd share with you all just how I did it in case you ever want to do this yourself. I had to <strike>get ghetto</strike> use a few 'unconventional methods' for a few steps but whatever gets the job done, right?<br />
<br />
UPDATE (5/30/11):<br />
I just found these before pictures and decided to add them on here. I think you can appreciate the "after" much more if you see how bad it was before. It was bad and it was sad. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7OmTpY9CDh4YBIFUlL82cRNkG4v5RV9SKbpwGbFNStpyf7zdsP5vQJDQdHagZDmn462MaClWT02AzoZXe_-eRwXRQ7cc5mVS1AUNlc49FFiBdklVICv3fY-R5YuBCEx_W_-1Ry0w0bcp4/s1600/before1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7OmTpY9CDh4YBIFUlL82cRNkG4v5RV9SKbpwGbFNStpyf7zdsP5vQJDQdHagZDmn462MaClWT02AzoZXe_-eRwXRQ7cc5mVS1AUNlc49FFiBdklVICv3fY-R5YuBCEx_W_-1Ry0w0bcp4/s320/before1.jpg" width="186" /></a></div>
If you look closely at the bottom left you can see where paint stripper dripped on the floor when I stripped and repainted the cabinet a few months ago. Silly me, I didn't cover the floor before I started working that day. Oh well, that's in the past. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2GqaRXuQzL_qyu4Gdm1HPhQh6VeLYv6qHZxurVte4Jy3hmWXJ1ESu6cftVWs56MdpAC1-QfFRQKryr4CEmoFR3bJOt9ubXjg_1-Q56352gsNVVsFVHVHzozXsajKF24QoY3-rX1ldMnc7/s1600/before2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2GqaRXuQzL_qyu4Gdm1HPhQh6VeLYv6qHZxurVte4Jy3hmWXJ1ESu6cftVWs56MdpAC1-QfFRQKryr4CEmoFR3bJOt9ubXjg_1-Q56352gsNVVsFVHVHzozXsajKF24QoY3-rX1ldMnc7/s320/before2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
1. We had to level the floor first because there was cement tile underneath the old laminate flooring (there was no easy way to remove this) that had a few very slight uneven and cracked areas. We used something called 'floorboard' which runs about $8 or so per panel at any home improvement store.Since we couldn't drill screws into the cement, we used liquid nails to adhere the board to the cement floor. We found a bunch of heavy stuff all around the house to use to as weight and left it to dry overnight.<br />
<br />
<br />
This is the tile we chose. You can kind of see in this picture that the tile curves down around the edges which makes it look a little more like ceramic. Not all laminate square tiles are like this so I don't know how it would look with a flat option.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKSwEJQJMraQtiRxduDimagB2ne0_eqRDrlTNcl8lfyHnGfi5sPaz-ph0Vss4NB9aHk_AcJ-zeqtyEbJbP65iE3JJk3cMiImVBzaOe1EgKxlaDGcB2QaIVIlwxVVxVxNuE9AACkVx5x9mb/s1600/tile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKSwEJQJMraQtiRxduDimagB2ne0_eqRDrlTNcl8lfyHnGfi5sPaz-ph0Vss4NB9aHk_AcJ-zeqtyEbJbP65iE3JJk3cMiImVBzaOe1EgKxlaDGcB2QaIVIlwxVVxVxNuE9AACkVx5x9mb/s320/tile.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
2. Once floorboard was ready, I was able to start laying the tile. I used spacers, just as you would for ceramic tile to leave a gap in between tiles, leaving space for the grout.<br />
<br />

3. The tile around the tub was kinda tricky because the tub is not straight lined, it has some curves. Being the creative and crafty person that I am, I came up with an easy solution. I got an unwanted 12x12 scrapbook sheet and cut it down to the same size as the tile-about 11 1/2 by 11 1/2. Next, I put it where the tile should go and used a pencil to draw a line where I'd need to cut. I have a heavy duty paper cutter and used it to cut down tile squares. Another unconventional method. Lol<br />

4. Once I laid all the tile, I was ready to grout. I bought a small can of premixed grout which was $8.97 and probably only used a third of it. All I did was, I used a small spatula and worked it into the grooves in between the tiles. I let it dry for about four hours and then went back and cleaned up the excess grout with a sponge.<br />

<br />
Here's the breakdown on cost:<br />
*Floorboard: $16<br />
*Liquid Nails: $6<br />
*Tile: $25<br />
*Grout: $9<br />
*Sponge:$0--we had<br />
*Spatula: $0--we had<br />
Total Cost: $56!!!!<br />
<br />
This option might not be for everyone but we're certainly happy with the result! The three main reasons we chose this option: easy to install, quick (once we applied the tile to the floor, we were ready to move forward to the next step), and easy clean-up (not very messy).<br />
<br />
Almost done with the room, more details coming soon!<br />

This is actually the name of the street we live on and my hubby came up with this cute name. Looking forward to sharing all the busyness our lives consist of whether it's home remodeling, fun stuff with the kids, yummy food, or being crafty. :) Tomorrow I will share with you all how I installed the new floor in our restroom so be sure to swing by.<br />
<br />
...btw, I've added a few old posts from my previous blog.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-39500271109725367232011-05-25T01:21:00.001-05:002011-06-01T17:00:53.460-05:00Restroom in ProgressA few weeks ago we confirmed what we'd been fearing for some time....we had mold in the restroom. Yikes! The family and I kept getting sick and at first we thought it was allergies but then we noticed the restroom started smelling kinda funky and realized that it was the wall behind the toilet. There was some water damage to the floor near the wall behind the toilet and we discovered that it too had mold. We were stressing out. This was definitely not a project we were planning to tackle any time soon but we had to fix this quick. After we removed the toilet and sink, we removed the wall and we found the cause for the mold: one of the pipes had a crack and every time we used the faucet, water would leak out and cause water damage to the wall and eventually seeped down to the floor. We're not finished just yet but we're getting there. All we need to do is texture and paint which we plan to finish up by tomorrow night if all goes well (I'm texturing during the day and then we can paint at night.)<br />
I'll share a more detailed post of all we did once we're done. In the meantime, here are a few pictures of the room in progress. <br />

My hubby is really into making good, tasty beef burgers so we thought we'd try making turkey burgers for dinner today. The meat is not at all like beef, it feels a little sticky and of course when done, it turns white instead of brown. I found a <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Seasoned-Turkey-Burgers/Detail.aspx">recipe</a> online that took just a few minutes to prepare, it was really easy. We usually throw the patties on the grill but since it was raining today we decided to cook them on our cast iron grill instead. I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised with the outcome. "They came out so yummy" as my dear daughter said. You can click on the link above to go to the direct page where I found the recipe or just read below. Let me know if you decide to try it and what you think.<br />

The two friends commented that it was sad those days were long gone and could no longer live life carefree and spending each day playing and just having fun. My dear hubby told them that as a parent, you are able to live those moments again with your children and have fun creating memories right along with them. It brings joy to my heart that we are able to share these special moments with our children, watching them play, laugh, and experience new things during there adolesence.<br />
We recently took our kids to the new Legoland that just opened at Grapevine Mills Mall. They did a great job in all the details of the 'dreamland' they created. They even have magical sounding classical music that makes you feel like you are living out your dream by being there. It really is quiet and experience. It is a little pricey but we were able to get discount tickets online and after being there for almost 2 1/2 hours, I think it was worth the price.<br />
<br />
It begins by entering the lego factory and they learn all about how legos are made by Dr. Brick a Brack (I think that was his name). They are even able to help in making a batch a legos.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX9pCuW1rrtCkSQ1M3z-RWMaL5uXaFlsf2wcZfOICm_kQWbhBd-I8IgQaRMnyT4CVww630ylavAjoVzAPvICQ2SOqv3FGOkJoe4_t3R-vDcZuIx9tGPDgvN2wVqSc8Z3kQTeUJIRxnDYQ/s1600/145.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX9pCuW1rrtCkSQ1M3z-RWMaL5uXaFlsf2wcZfOICm_kQWbhBd-I8IgQaRMnyT4CVww630ylavAjoVzAPvICQ2SOqv3FGOkJoe4_t3R-vDcZuIx9tGPDgvN2wVqSc8Z3kQTeUJIRxnDYQ/s320/145.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We then took a ride through 'Kingdom Quest' which is pretty much a video game come to life. We were taken aback at how almost everything there is made out of Legos! It was incredible! There is a section called, 'Lego Miniland' and it has some awesome Lego structures of city landmarks in the DFW area.<br />

<br />
All in all, we had a wonderful time. My kids have already asked a few times when we're going back. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-78037645035701724082011-04-12T01:53:00.001-05:002011-06-01T17:03:19.174-05:00Bedside Chest of Drawers...Before & AfterSo, I thought I'd share with y'all how I did my first ever furniture makeover project. It was actually quite simple, especially since my chest of drawers didn't have any grooves in it.<br />
This was handed down to me from my mother when my brother bought new furniture and no longer needed it. Here is how it looked before:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJNRMzRZFFklUvlLzMAibdculfOIBqEjt9QOLENxeWNWhIsMkIq2-o7UQcoh_sc0WS_bnD6GmAbHXCM6ZjdhWoPR_KiYznMzPUWWSWg96CaWqsAp35Q3BNb_Modl74vBxIWmjwVY-Gz8M/s1600/109_0220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJNRMzRZFFklUvlLzMAibdculfOIBqEjt9QOLENxeWNWhIsMkIq2-o7UQcoh_sc0WS_bnD6GmAbHXCM6ZjdhWoPR_KiYznMzPUWWSWg96CaWqsAp35Q3BNb_Modl74vBxIWmjwVY-Gz8M/s320/109_0220.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see, it needed a good wipe down before I could get started. After thorougly cleaning the dresser in it's entirety, I was ready for my next step. Since there was a glossy shine to the wood, I needed to sand of the shine finish so that the primer would adhere better to the wood.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxvCmOTat9nO_jaZnw8hqD1U_pmQ8QPkFkU-clVDe8gEdPvw75Sx9bhAnh-zCPjxFH66DzdE9Ax7obQQiYslmzO4Kupp-jcm1B-93zCbIaP5xBpQAlcX6WXw9C4zKrBT0jcQJpBVr9fJg/s1600/109_0227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxvCmOTat9nO_jaZnw8hqD1U_pmQ8QPkFkU-clVDe8gEdPvw75Sx9bhAnh-zCPjxFH66DzdE9Ax7obQQiYslmzO4Kupp-jcm1B-93zCbIaP5xBpQAlcX6WXw9C4zKrBT0jcQJpBVr9fJg/s320/109_0227.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see, I used a small handheld sander which made the process so easy. I had to go over it a few times, to be sure I didn't leave any shiny spots anywhere. The next step: primer<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL8PEOAoTZpf4IlKUbVzycdSnCfs_CS-mbD-cfttX1ZUC6BANARh_C2-iI7mglzQUp5SpFZW-o04vhBmyWgJ2S6SOx7jSyRAsVOyo9C1W6mVsLWqBELzPoRJBI9c4V-QtwJ0TLG2IsOWI/s1600/109_0228.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL8PEOAoTZpf4IlKUbVzycdSnCfs_CS-mbD-cfttX1ZUC6BANARh_C2-iI7mglzQUp5SpFZW-o04vhBmyWgJ2S6SOx7jSyRAsVOyo9C1W6mVsLWqBELzPoRJBI9c4V-QtwJ0TLG2IsOWI/s320/109_0228.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Don't let the rust on that brush fool you. The bristles are in good condition which is what matters anyway, right? I think we left it soaking once too long and that caused it to rust on top. Anyway, I gave the piece two good coats of primer, waiting between each coat to give ample time to dry. The next step was to paint with the top coat and decided to go with white semi-gloss paint I already had. The last and final step was to add new knobs. And here it is when all was said and done:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZFF-qq14uvDLzpwnPD6ny8deZdh_CuM0SciVely3bYacFx1P7NtoI1Xg2S6WgqNHkEpbKCifqjkNoLdPL4y6g7H0uFJKA-VsuGlZjgM4ZyfX1bDnPhwMot10w1zvy4Olj7Yd3RoGO1aM/s1600/07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZFF-qq14uvDLzpwnPD6ny8deZdh_CuM0SciVely3bYacFx1P7NtoI1Xg2S6WgqNHkEpbKCifqjkNoLdPL4y6g7H0uFJKA-VsuGlZjgM4ZyfX1bDnPhwMot10w1zvy4Olj7Yd3RoGO1aM/s320/07.jpg" width="204" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
What did this little project of mine cost me? I already had the paint and primer from previous painting projects, and I already had the sander/sandpaper, along with my rusty paintbrush, so all I paid was $10 for the knobs at Target.<br />
As for the tabletop decor:<br />
*Lamp--$4.74 (clearance item from Target)<br />
*Orchid plant--FREE (V-day gift from hubby--he knows how I feel about spending money on roses since they die within a few days so thought I'd appreciate a plant instead. I LOVE IT! It came in a cute wicket basket with a valentine's bow but I didn't think it matched so I put it in the little tin container and wrap a piece of green ribbon around.)<br />
*Candles--FREE (already had)<br />
*black box--FREE (already had--it was from a Christmas gift set & was red. I just gave it a quick coat of black acrylic paint with a foam brush)<br />
<br />
All I need now is another just like it or atleast one to compliment it so I can put it on the other side of my bed. Bare with me for not showing a picture of each step by step process. I'm still trying to get in the groove of taking pictures while at work so I can share them with you all. I promise I'll TRY to do better from now on. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-1258928193312193982011-04-10T22:42:00.000-05:002011-05-29T03:18:22.116-05:00Living With Superheroes...<div style="text-align: center;">No need for me to worry, I'm being protected by my very own superheroes. :)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRUOluwPdVe4GmGyjI-gtNGeg-iEZJ5JmQ37DuOQN4iiuA90Pr_JdHEjlD_1eFrqICoKTe6ODtlUhV8xjVB5G_eVF5P_ZOsB-9Lwp-2U0WzbleMwQ8y8EEYQ2vXOPydcRefXFhDeXN-QQ/s1600/109_0216.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRUOluwPdVe4GmGyjI-gtNGeg-iEZJ5JmQ37DuOQN4iiuA90Pr_JdHEjlD_1eFrqICoKTe6ODtlUhV8xjVB5G_eVF5P_ZOsB-9Lwp-2U0WzbleMwQ8y8EEYQ2vXOPydcRefXFhDeXN-QQ/s320/109_0216.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-84562857231330243342011-04-08T02:07:00.001-05:002011-06-01T17:02:28.635-05:00A Girl On A Mission....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #20124d; font-size: large;">I've been hard at work the last couple of weeks giving our bedroom a much needed makeover. It's kinda late to be posting, but I keep putting this off and thought a short post with a few pictures would have to do for now. I still have a few more things to buy and do before I'm done but I just wanted to share a few pictures of my work in progress. When I'm finally complete with my makeover, I'll share some before and after pics of everything along with all my bargain finds. :) Let me know what you think of everything so far. </span></div>

<br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-607369757464673450.post-71177012563452227442011-03-01T23:47:00.001-06:002011-06-01T17:02:57.261-05:00Prepare to be amazed.....Well, not yet anyway, but it's coming. In order to get to the big kitchen remodel, there are a few steps we need to take. For example, we removed the washer & dryer that were formerly situated in the kitchen and moved them over to our new laundry room, which I blogged about in a previous post. Our next step was to remove the current back door and install a new back door in our dining room. This will allow us to close off that wall so we can have more cabinet space in our new kitchen.<br />
<br />
On Sunday, I'm proud to say that Jesse & I installed the new door all by ourselves. :) Although, I do have to mention that our very good friend Renito lent us some tools we'd need for the project and was sure to give us so much needed tips for installing the new door. Oh, and it's amazing what kind of things you can learn from youtube. :) We ran into a few bumps toward the end of the project, but overall, it wasn't as hard as we thought it'd be. We still need to finish adding the molding on both sides (inside & outside) but the hardest part of the installation is behind us. Here are a few pics:<br />
<br />

Before we started:</div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
....and the door just went in perfectly. :) ....Soon after this picture, we realized that we weren't done just yet. We installed the doorknobs only to realize that the door was too far away from the frame so it wouldn't lock. We had to loosen the frame a little, level the door again, loosen the frame a little more, level again, loosen the frame just a little more, level again, well you get the picture. Included were:<br />
*7 base cabinets--including large sink base, & 2 corner bases<br />
*8 upper cabinets<br />
*Countertop<br />
*Kitchen sink--stainless steel<br />
*Stove hood vent<br />
<br />
We're most likely going to give the countertop & sink to my mother-in-law who is also making plans to remodel her kitchen soon. We have been blessed to receive several things ourselves so we really want to help someone else if we're able to.<br />
<br />
Here is a picture of one of the cabinets just so you can see the style of it. We have a lot of work ahead of us with these cabinets. We will need to sand, prime, & paint them so I'll be sure to take lots of pictures during the process. I also want to buy new handles.<br />

Seems like my life is always busy, but the past several weeks have been busier than usual. Let's see, I went to a three-day women's conference, helped my mom organize and have a moving sale, had my own online sale on craigslist--which I took pictures of every item I posted, celebrated my husband's 31st birthday, youth lock-in, prepared my house & family before leaving to NJ/NY, and of course visited my dear friend Stacy. Add that to the average daily/weekly routines of cooking, cleaning, bathing :), homeschooling, spending time with the hubby, and church and you have yourself a VERY busy schedule. </div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Things were going just a little too fast for me so my sweet hubby decided to take a day off so we could take a short break from all the hustle and bustle and have some fun family time together. We decided to take the Mayah & Isaiah to "The Museum of Science & History". If you haven't been, I would highly recommend you go, whether you have kids or not. Right now, they have a special exhibit titled, "Lost in Egypt". It was perfect because we were about to start studying this time period in History.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
Mayah loved the idea of sitting on a camel to imagine she was living during this time. Jesse looks like he's enjoying it too. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
This is a recreated dig where pieces of a clay pot were found. We've already discussed archeologists and what they do so Mayah was really interested in this section of the exhibit.</div>

These are just a few pics I wanted to share of our day at the museum. We've already been twice since they remodeled and they had something different each time. The kids love it, I love it, there is definitely something for everyone and it's very educational as well. We plan to buy a family membership next year so we can visit anytime we want....looking forward to that!</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
